Does it seem like you’re never able to find the motivation you need to get things started to really start anything and to actually achieve your goals. Where does the motivation really come from? On this episode of the intentional edit podcast, we’re going to get into how to actually achieve your goals and what you can do to make the necessary changes so that you could get those results that you desire with four steps and easy solutions that you can actually follow.
There are two questions that I receive probably more often than any other question. And that people submit. The first one is where to start. They’re asking, or you are probably asking, where do I start organizing? Where do decluttering projects begin? I have so much stuff. I just don’t know where to start.
So that’s the first one. And then the other one involves [00:02:00] motivation. You’re giving me the answer. You’re telling me where to start, but how do I stay motivated? How do I even get motivated? I want to get this stuff done, but I have zero motivation to do it. Where does that motivation come from?
realize both of these questions go hand in hand and believe it or not both have a multi-step process to find that solid solution. Some of those steps, the crucial steps, the ones that are crucial that are going to be the same thing, whether you’re saying where do I start organizing or.
I know where to start, but where do I get the motivation? Or maybe you are. Really stuck. And you don’t know where to start and you have no motivation. The crucial steps are going to be the same if I’m answering either one of those questions. Good intentional habits, the intentional habits that we’re always talking about on the intentional edit podcast.
Those great intentional habits are going to carry you through. That is what is going to keep you consistent to get you to the end goal of an organized clutter-free simplified, easy household to run. If it, you want that simplified lifestyle, then you have to combine those three things. You have to do clutter.
You have to get the excess out of your home. You have to organize and you have to implement the systems and routines to do all of those things. And all of that is covered in the simplified home masterclass. The link for that is in the show description. let’s talk about motivation today. We’re going to zone in on motivation, really the motivation side of things, because motivation is temporary. Let me say that again. You want to know where does this motivation come from? I, all I need is motivation.
Motivation is a, not something that carries you through motivation is temporary. Think about it. Like when you feel so happy, you’re [00:04:00] ecstatic or when you’re really upset or you’re down, those are temporary states that you are in, the motivation might get, you started with something new, but it will not be there through the end of the project. And it certainly will not get you to your goals because motivation is a temporary thing.
So I want you to forget the idea of finding the motivation Forget the idea of where does the motivation come from? I need to get motivated instead let’s set some goals, find a plan. And stick with that plan. You have to focus on building intentional habits and get you to your goal. Uh, by using those three things, I just said set some goals.
Come up with a plan, stick to that plan. And stay focused on those three thing is if you have intentional habits, those will get you to your goal. And that’s what makes it possible for you to keep going long term. We’re not trying to find a quick fix and easy solution. We want you to be successful. Long-term with this.
If you’re going to spend the time and put in the effort to make a change and do something that will positively affect your life, the life of everyone that comes to your home. Your family’s life, how they function. Then we are thinking long-term this is not a quick fix. It’s not going to take a few minutes. You have to put the effort in. So set the goals, come up with that plan, stick to it. So you could focus on building the intentional habits that will create the simplified life habits, make it so you don’t have to use mental energy to get things done. When you actually spend time, when you take the time to follow the solid plan, a plan gives you the tools and instructions to follow.
So you know what to do because you’ve spent the time creating the plan. Plan you’re able to develop habits that you don’t even have to think [00:06:00] about or wonder about that motivation. Member you’re like, I need the motivation. Where does the motivation come from? When you have the plan, you follow the plan. It’s like a set of instructions. You follow those instructions and you do not have to worry about the motivation because the motivation is not, what’s going to carry you through. Remember when I said the motivation is temporary.
Well, when the motivation is temporary, it’s not going to be there. Long-term. that means something else has to carry you to the end. Something else has to help you get to the end goal and that something else is the plan. That action plan that you are going to do, because you’re going to create this because you want to have those intentional habits.
Think about the things you do daily. Most of these things that you do on a daily basis, if you’re going through your day, you’re doing them because they are out of habit. You might make a quick breakfast or a cup of coffee. You shower, you brush your teeth, all these things in the morning. You’re not thinking about doing them, checking them off the list they have to be done. These are just things that happen. This is the ritual of your morning.
your day is like that habits are ritualistic things that we do. Do you have motivation? For yourself to do these things, or you’re like, oh my gosh, where’s the motivation. I have to go make my cup of coffee. Now I really needed that motivation to brush my teeth. Probably not because these things are habits. Are you searching for ways to find motivation to keep your teeth clean? No, you’re not. It’s a habit.
To make your morning coffee. No, it’s a habit. The answer is no, because you don’t do something because of motivation. When they are a habit and some of our habits are intentional. And some of our habits are not, at some point you did something over and over again enough times. And that means that thing became the [00:08:00] habit. It’s just the simple way that you go about doing whatever that is.
maybe it was a healthy habit you created and whether it was a healthy habit or it may be it’s an unhealthy habit. An unhealthy habit could be keeping you lazy could be keeping you stuck. Maybe you’re getting too much caffeine or whatever that habit is. Habits are not necessarily good. They can be unhealthy and they can be healthy. They can be serving you. They can be dragging you down.
Think about creating habits that will make you successful, that will push you to your goal that will help you achieve your goal habits are what puts something away. When we have used something in our home, instead of leaving it out on the counter or on the couch or on the floor or taking our shoes off. And before, you know, it there’s six pairs of shoes.
All out and about. our house was cleaning a couple days ago, but now stuff is everywhere. If you have set up those intentional habits to spend 2, 3, 4 seconds putting something back, instead of leaving it there. That is a habit that is going to help you some football simplify. It helps you feel better in your environment because your home stays picked up with minimal effort with just seconds a day. So remember, habits are what.
We’ll get you to putting something away when we’re done with it. Or a unhealthy habit would be why we keep it out. Habits are when we have something like a late night snack. If you are used to snacking before bedtime. or if you have set up an intention or process where you never have a bite of food after dinner, or you finish eating at 6:00 PM and another bite of food will not go in your mouth. Either one of those could be the habit that you are in. If you’re a chronic stacker, that’s a habit. If you never sack, that’s a habit, habits become ritualistic thing is that don’t take mental energy.
You don’t think about them. It’s just the way that you go about your [00:10:00] day. We all have habits. We have hundreds. If not thousands of habits. Once they’re developed, they are something that is second nature. When something is a habit, motivation is not involved at all. It’s not involved even a little bit.
The truth about motivation is that motivation comes and goes. If you have ever tried a new routine that is difficult or a diet, or you challenge yourself to do something. That is harder or like upleveling, you’re doing something way more difficult than what you’re currently doing. You know, that motivation is not going to keep you going. It might help you start motivation. It’s great to give you that kickstart, but you can also make excuses and never really get going. You never really begin.
In many ways, motivation can be a myth. You think it’s what you need at this point. You’re like, I need the motivation. I just don’t know how to start. I needed that motivation and you think it’s what you need, but it’s not what you need at all. It’s not going to help you pass that initial phase. It’s not going to help you pass that initial moment where you get going, you got the idea and you became excited about the outcome and the results you want, the outcome you want to get to that end goal. You want to live with those results.
From starting something new, you know, you have to make a change, you know, you have to start something new. So you’re excited about the end result. So what do you need to do if motivation is not really what you need? There’s a couple things we’re going to get into that. You have to do these things to take action. So to take action, you need to do the following. And I have a couple of things that are really going to help you. The first one is you need to identify what that desired outcome is or what is that goal that you have in mind? What are you wanting to achieve?
And why is this important to you? Why is this significant this step? This first step is important because you will need to [00:12:00] find an expert or. Or a class, maybe a coach or something that is going to get you to the next step to make it to that outcome, to get to that end goal that you’re looking for.
You might have to spend some time researching who this is, but when you find that person commit and go all in, because spending hour searching on Instagram or Google to solve your problem and piecing little things together like, oh, this person has a good idea for this. And this person has a good idea for this.
And oh, I saw this. Maybe I’ll do this and I’ll paste this quote on my wall and maybe that will motivate me. And then I’ll go to this website cause they have good information too. That is not cutting it anymore. If that were the solution, then you would already be to the answer because you’ve been doing that. You’ve been looking on Instagram, looking on Pinterest, doing the Google searches.
And it’s not working. It’s like putting a bandaid on a gash that needs a hundred stitches. It’s not working. Find the expert, find the course, sign up for the class. Maybe you need a coach, whatever that is. Find the person who’s already been there, who has come up with the formula and has a proven plan. And that’s, what’s going to do.
There’s two step two. So the first thing is to identify that desired outcome, have your goal in mind and think about what do I want to achieve? What is the goal and why is that important? The second thing is find that plan and follow the plan commit to following the plan. That is significantly important because without a plan you are destined to fail.
When you find that program, when you find that plan and it aligns with your goals where the instructions that you have are something that you’re going to be able to follow, put in the work. Put in the effort, invest in yourself. And that might mean spending a little bit of money or using your time differently.
Baking. Changes, but you [00:14:00] have to do these things to get the desired result, because what you are currently doing is not getting you to that result and you have proven that over and over again. You have to make changes to get a different outcome. If your goal is to organize your home and keep it organized with less clutter, you can sign up for the simplified home masterclass. That is a proven plan. The link for that is in the notes of this podcast. It’s in the podcast description, you can check out all the information. It’s a proven plan that works because it takes you.
Through all of the steps that you need, the three steps of decluttering removing that excess from your home organizing. And it walks you through every single room in the house. So you can organize specific to each room and you have to create the systems and routines that maintain and keep up the organization.
If you want to declutter and get rid of the excess of the things in your home, then sign up. Cause I know for the simplified home masterclass, Let’s recap, the first two steps identify the desired outcome. What is the goal that you want? Why do you want to achieve it to find and follow a plan? The third thing you’re going to do is keep going. When it gets hard, you have to push through making a change will not be easy. It doesn’t matter what it is when you are going to make a change. There will be a time where it becomes difficult.
If you slip up, if you make a mistake. Well, let me rephrase that. It should be. When you slip up when you fall behind, when you make a mistake, when you fall off the plan. Don’t make excuses pick up where you left off. Start again tomorrow when you realize you have fallen off the plan, get right back up and start following that plan. Again, it usually takes a minimum of 30 days to create a new habit, 30 days to [00:16:00] make a new routine. And that routine is what is going to become the habit. And remember, from a few minutes ago, a habit is what is going to keep you going.
So when you make the mistake and you haven’t. Completed the plan like you thought you would, or there is something that derails the train. Just keep it going. Pick up where you left off the. The best possible plan is the one that you stick with. Long-term. Once you get past the initial phase where you’re putting in the work, you’re making the big changes you’re trying to get to that desired results. The habits are what is going to carry you through to the longterm long lasting results.
Are going to happen because of the habits. And that’s going to take us to the fourth thing, the fourth step in this phase. I want you to let the habits, keep you going. Let me say that again. Let the habits be what keeps you going? The habits are what makes this new achievement? Continue on. And it makes it seem that it has minimal effort. The idea would be that it’s effortless because it is a habit. It’s just the way we do things. We’re not thinking about it.
But at the very least, it’s going to take minimal effort once that habit is going in and it’s in full force. When it’s a habit, it’s something that simply gets done. Go back to this plan and focus on showing up every single day and following what the plan is, what the program that you sign up for, whatever that is teaching you.
What the coaches telling you the words that they’re saying, what instructions are you following? Keep following them to have success because you are not piecing things together anymore. You’re not doing the Google search. You are following a proven plan when you truly commit. So do the decluttering consistently follow the instructions to get organized?
And [00:18:00] build the habits. Take the time to build the habits around, putting things away instead of leaving them out. When you’re intentional about the habits that you create and you follow the plan to get to that place. Where these habits are working for you, they’re working for your family. Things become much easier. The house stays picked up with way less effort.
We put things back instead of leave them out. All kinds of things are simplified. Stop with the excuses that you don’t know how to get motivated, or you can’t find the motivation. You don’t know where to begin because you don’t have that motivation. Stop worrying about motivation because it’s not going to help you. And it’s certainly not going to get you.
The results that you desire, it may help you start, but that’s it. It’s the starting point. It’s not going to get you those desired results. If motivation gets you started, that’s great. Celebrate that. Let’s let the motivation get you started because that’s all it’s going to do. If it’s going to help you get started lead into it.
Put your plan in place, lean into the starting point with that motivation, but you have to have a plan that you will follow to keep you going when you don’t feel motivated at all. Remember motivation is fleeting. It’s temporary. It’s not going to be there. Long-term spend time creating the intentional habits.
That are going to keep you going when the motivation is not there. And that will happen. Motivation is not a long-term thing. If you don’t know where to start or exactly how to get going with whatever the plan is or the program is, that is exactly right for you. Reach out to me, anything that is involving your home, decluttering, organizing, coming up with those routines, I can help you with that. If you’re struggling sending me a question and I am happy to help you with whatever I can or point you in the direction of a program or a coach or something that will help you make sure you do. The fourth thing is identify the desired outcome.
Have that goal in mind. What do you want to achieve? Why do you want to achieve that? Find a plan and follow it. Stick to that plan. When things get hard, make sure you keep going. the fourth thing, the final thing is when you slip up, let the habits be what keeps you going? Let the habits carry you through, create those exceptional, intentional habits that are going to serve you and allow you to get rid of the clutter, streamline everything in your home. Have good routines and finally get organized.
