now I’m wanting to get in to the question that came in today. This question is one of the number one questions or some version of this people ask all the time. I’m going to answer it again here, because it is so important and it is so frequently asked and it is such a common struggle. So the question says.
You say to start organizing in the room, that is the most stressful place in your house. But a lot of the rooms have too much in them and give me anxiety. If there is not one room than where two. Then where do we begin? Great question. So you’re basically saying I have too much stuff. I have clutter everywhere. The thought of [00:04:00] organizing it gives me anxiety. The clutter everywhere gives me anxiety.
Where do I start this process? Because it all needs to be done. Every room has something that needs to be touched in terms of purging and getting to that point where it’s organized. A lot of people say things like my entire house needs to be organized. Where do I begin? I have too much stuff everywhere.
When you say something like that, or you’re thinking I have too much stuff everywhere and I need help with where to start. Where do I begin this process? How do I know where to start? The de-cluttering the truth is. That question is actually a little bit of an excuse and I almost hate to say that to you.
But it is a bit of an excuse to not start the project to hold off your you’re putting off the starting point. And you’re making that a huge thing when it doesn’t have to be a huge thing. I’m going to break this down a little bit more. If your concern is getting organized and bringing organization to your home so you can live a more simplified life and have the day to day be significantly easier.
You have clutter here and there but it’s a really the organization that you’re looking for. If this sounds like you, so you’re saying I want to get organized. I need to get organized. You are looking for organization. That I’m going to tell you to start in the spot. That is the most stressful for you. So if you’re the person that’s saying, I need to get organized and you have little piles of clutter here and there, you probably have some clutter behind closed doors, things that you haven’t dealt with, but your house is it generally.
A overwhelming. Place in terms of what it looks like with piles everywhere and Xs everywhere and too much stuff. When people come over, they wouldn’t say this person has way too much stuff. I feel stressed out in this home. So if this is you, where you’re saying, I just needed to get organized. I want you to start in the spot. That is the most stressful for you. [00:06:00] That means the place that when you are at home, you feel the most irritable when you are in that space, trying to use it as it is supposed to be used. So if you’re in the kitchen and you can’t cook, or you can’t find counter space to make lunches, because everything is a mess all over, you have too much stuff on the counters or the counters become a dumping ground.
That means you don’t have a system in place to deal with that stuff. You can’t. Use the kitchen officially, and it’s driving you crazy. It’s making you irritable. I would say, start in the kitchen, start there. That might mean just simply start with the kitchen counters. That would be your first place to declutter. Put those items away and then organize if your laundry room is such a mess and that’s the place where everything gets shoved, it has clean clothes and dirty clothes and they get mixed together and you don’t know what is what, and there’s always stuff all over the floor, all over the top of the washing machine and the dryer.
Dryer and all over the counters, you can’t get caught up on the larger, you feel like you’re always behind and you can’t use this room or this closet or this area. Where the washer and dryer are because there’s too much stuff and you don’t have the systems in place to get a handle on it. And that’s the place where you find yourself frustrated every single day. Then I would say, start with that. Start with the laundry room, start with the, the place or the spot that brings up the stress and the irritability. That is where you’re going to start.
Is it the toy clutter and the family room, the toys are on the couch, on the floor, on the tables. If that is what is really bothering you, start with that. Do you code are the toys? And get proper storage for them so they can be put away when they’re not in use. But you also have to do the third part of the steps. You all.
You know, I always talk about the three steps you have to get rid of the clutter. So you have to do the decluttering. You have to organize. And the final step is you have to come up with that system, that system that will get those toys put [00:08:00] away at the end of the play time. And that situation. you are going to start with these stressful places and you have to work your way through all three things, declutter, organize and come up with those systems to maintain this great organization, to prevent the clutter from coming back in.
you have to make sure you do all three steps. You still have to declutter. You still have to organize and you still have to implement the systems. Those three things will never change. You have to make sure that those systems are good to put the things away, to put the things back, to keep up and prevent the mess, to have the success that you are craving and to have an orderly home that isn’t causing you stress an orderly home that stays organized.
That you can truly enjoy and relax in and have fun with your family. And when you start with the spot, that is the most stressful, you feel the results of this or right away. And that’s one of the reasons why I recommend start with the spot that is causing you stress. Versus starting with a closet and an extra bedroom that’s upstairs. You maybe only go in there a few times a year.
It only gets used a few times a year. Even if that, if you were to start in that closet, when your entire house needs to be organized, you’re not going to notice the benefits. You will see it when it’s done, and then you close the door and you’re not reminded of that all the time. Eventually, of course you want to get every area in your home. Every closet, every drawer, every cabinet, every shelf, you want to get it all done, but it is a process. And it takes time starting with areas that you use frequently that are bothering you and stressing you out on a daily basis and annoying you frequently.
Those are the areas that are going to allow you to feel the results you get to live with the benefits. And you live with the changes while you’re still moving through the house. And completing the decluttering and the organizing on the setting up systems. if [00:10:00] you are in a situation where you have this.
House that is full of clutter with too much stuff with things everywhere. I’m still going to tell you to start in an area that drives you crazy, that makes you irritable. That makes you stressed out, that you notice frequently, and you get that feeling where you are annoyed because of how that makes you feel or how that looks start there.
It might be so much stuff that you have accumulated that you can’t tackle an entire room. This is common if you can’t tackle an entire room. So what, no one cares. Tackle one pile. Start with one a drawer. If it’s the family space that you spend most of your time in, and there is a big stack or a pile of stuff on the floor that has accumulated and you don’t even know what it is.
Gather that. And set a timer. Give yourself 10, 15 minutes. Go through it. See what’s in there. Toss the trash. Get a pile for donation and spend time putting everything away that doesn’t belong on the floor right there in a place where it should actually go and actually be put away, spend 10 or 15 minutes on that. And then.
Move on to the next thing. What is another pile? What is another place? Do you have a drawer that is so crammed full of things that you can’t. Shut the drawer easily. You always have to move something out of the way. Take out the drawer, take everything out of it. Go through the thing is be ruthless with your decluttering, but the bottom line is, start with a place.
Or a spot or a little drawer or one shelf or one pile, a console table, a coffee table, whatever it is. Start with the place that is causing you. Stress something that annoys you focus on that zone in spend the time 10, 15, 20 minutes. Tackling that small little area, that small drawer, that small pile one pile.
And then move on. If you have more time in that day and you could spend another 15, [00:12:00] 20 minutes on something else. Great. If you can’t do it until the next day, it doesn’t matter. The point is. Start somewhere and move through until everything is done. Don’t look at it like the entire house needs to be decluttered because that is overwhelming. That is adding to the stress that is adding to your anxious feelings. And when in your stay in that question, this gives me anxiety. That’s why.
Break it down. Think small thing called one little thing at a time, 10, 15, 20 minute tasks. And always, I will tell you. Start with a space that is giving you. Annoyed feelings, irritable feelings.
