Let’s get started on this tip Tuesday episode of the intentional edit podcast. Thank you for joining me for another tip. Tuesday episode of the intentional edit podcast today is episode 44 and we are talking all about mindset. A couple questions have come in over the last few weeks and I’ve been involved in some conversations with different people, both in person and virtual. It’s never fun to be around people that are negative or give off that those negative feelings, the negative energy, and have a lot of excuses. When someone is not willing to change or grow, it can be frustrating, but most people go through that at some point or different times in their life, or are round people that come off that way, challenges and struggles can bring out the worst in people not feeling good can make you come off like a negative person or a downer, but life isn’t smooth sailing.

(01:55):

The reality is life isn’t smooth sailing. And every hour of every day is not going to be happy or an exciting and enjoyable time. There are a lot of mundane things that we have to do, and we have to be content in those moments. What do you need to do to feel better in the everyday moments and learn to embrace and enjoy the little things it’s all about mindset. It truly is all about mindset. Mindset affects everything. When someone’s smile is at you, how do you feel if you’re walking into a store and someone gives you a quick smile, how does that make you feel? Another way to think about that is if someone is in a situation where they make eye contact with you and you smile at them, how do you feel? Does it change your overall outlook? Does it make you better?

(02:45):

It should. Most people would say yes that they can relate to that a quick Lance with a smile or a smirk or just a nice welcoming face can make you feel a lot better. It can change your negative thoughts quickly. What can you do to change your thoughts to result in a better mindset? If that’s why you’re here. We are going to dive in and talk about that today. Think about when you want to make a change in your life, or you need to make a significant decision. The tactical goal components of those things are the easiest parts. The individual steps are usually manageable, especially when you break it down into tiny steps, the more you break it down, the easier it gets. And you see the simplicity behind what you’re trying to do. It takes the overwhelm way because you have broke putting it down into these manageable things that you can do.

(03:42):

When I work with busy moms on coaching calls that are stuck in that overwhelm stressed out place, we come up with a plan and create systems. So step by step instructions to get them to the desired result that they’re looking for. Each step is so simple because it’s broken down. It’s a manageable and it’s actually easy. So we come up with this plan of easy steps that she can do in her house for her family, or even with her family to simplify life. We solve the problem with the little individual easy steps. But when she came to the call with the big issues that were causing this feelings of overwhelm and frustration, really most of the time, these moms are at their breaking points. These issues seem huge. They seem like daunting tasks that are impossible to manage, but we come up with the solution by breaking it down.

(04:34):

And then we get rid of the excuses. Mindset is a game change in this. If you have a growth mindset, then all of these things seem possible. You’re open to making the changes. And that’s when you have success. When you are stuck in a negative stuck mindset, then you have the excuses, the things seem impossible, and you’re really not in a place where you’re willing to make changes better yourself or your home or your environment. Mindset is a lot like the smile example I gave a minute ago, a smile can change how you feel and the overall outlook of the moments going forward. But it’s common to struggle with mindset because it’s more difficult to find tactical things to change. When we’re talking about the way the, it we’re thinking, then when we’re trying to solve a physical problem, I said more difficult, but it’s not impossible.

(05:30):

And it’s probably a lot easier than you think your thoughts control how you feel in a situation, what you want to do or what you don’t wanna do. The, they really control the acceptance of everything. The willingness to be open and accepting, or are you closed off, that’s all in your mindset and it can go either way. Have you ever heard the term that someone is coachable? If someone tells you that you’re coachable, it’s a huge compliment because they’re saying to you that you’re open, you’re willing to better yourself. You’re willing to better your circumstances and to make changes, to get the results that you’re looking for in terms of home and lifestyle, getting organized, simplifying, making life easier, and having the ability to enjoy more and stress less. We’re gonna talk about how mindset fits in with all that. Let me give you a couple examples.

(06:27):

When someone wants to be more organized, but refuses to purge anything they’re stuck in that negative mindset refusing to urge is the excuse that they’re giving. They will never be organized because they’re refusing to do a critical part of getting organized. Another example is when you have a busy mom that is crying and stressed out about a messy house in the house, never being clean, but refuses to implement systems, to make any changes or even have the kids help with chore for just a few minutes, even 10 minutes a day. Right now you can see the excuses there’s solutions for this problem, but she’s not going to allow that to happen because she’s stuck in a negative mindset and controlling the situation with excuses and negativity and not willing to be open and make simple changes that take less than 10 minutes a day to end the majority of this problem.

(07:26):

Another example that comes to mind is if you’re always stressed out in the morning and you’re getting to appointments or dropping the kids off late or barely making it to school or work on time, but you shut other moms down. When they give you helpful strategies and give you things that you can do to eliminate this problem. That’s a closed off mindset. It’s not helping you. It’s keeping you stuck in that place. If those are your thoughts or mindsets, or you can relate to any of those things that I have said, then you are not coachable place right now with your mindset. The mindset is keeping you stuck, but you can change it. What does a mindset look like? If the person wants to make changes, if they’re truly in that coachable mindset, I’ll give you the same set of scenarios. The first one, the person that wants to be organized and always talks about how they wanna organized.

(08:20):

And they try all the things, but it never works. They would say something like I wanna be organized. The idea of getting rid of things causes me stress, but I’m willing to try something new. What can I do to be more comfortable with purging? There you go. That’s a coachable per person. That’s opening open to something new and is going to better their life and have positive results because of their attitude. Let’s flip up the one with the mom, with the messy house, instead of seeing what I said about being so upset and crying all the time and not willing to make any changes, a different mindset that will result in something good happening is saying something like I’m overwhelmed with our house being so messy. And I don’t know what to do. Can a few minutes of chores or 10 minute pick up a day, really be beneficial.

(09:10):

Help me come up with a plan to do this. That is a pot positive growth mindset, where this person is accepting of changes that need to be made small changes. That can make a big difference. That’s a lot different than not being willing to do something or not being willing or open to making any changes. The last example I gave about always being late, always running late in the ever on time to anything. If that mom would changed her mindset, it would look like something like maybe my kids can’t be late to school anymore. And I know there has to be a better way to handle art mornings. I’m not a morning person, but I wanna do better and I wanna feel better. So I’m not frazzled and already irritated by the time drop off happy in the morning. What can I do to make my mornings easier?

(09:59):

Those are all ways to reframe your thinking. You’re taking the negative, you’re getting rid of it. And you’re changing your mindset to an outlook, an open outlook where positivity can come into your life by easy changes. Little is that you can do. You might not have all the answers, but the answers are out there and you’re willing to receive help and guidance and finding them so that you can simplify and make life easier. If you are thinking that you might be stuck in this place of a stuck mindset where it’s like limiting you, what can you do to make those change? Because you want to take that negativity and that stuck place and turn it into a more open and a more growth mindset. The open growth mindset will help you feel better. You’ll have a better outlook on the stressful, hard and negative feelings that wanna keep you down and in that stuck place, but you don’t wanna be there.

(10:57):

So what can you do? Here’s a couple things I’m gonna tell you five things. You can do. One stop the negative. Self-talk if you wouldn’t say what you’re saying or thinking to someone else, stop saying it to yourself. When you catch yourself thinking these thoughts, make yourself say something nice, rephrase what you have just said so that you spin it and that you have something positive to say to yourself, something nice to say to yourself. Instead, the second thing you can do is eliminate the excuses. When you make excuses, I want you to rephrase them. Stop what you’re doing. The excuses are not okay anymore. Say something like there is a better way. I may not know what that is yet, but I’m going to look into it today. You’re going to replace the excuse with something manageable that will help you have success with whatever this is.

(11:47):

Issue is take accountability and stop blaming other people. It’s not anyone else’s fault. The third thing you can do is put yourself out there, try something new, find something small. And when I say small, I mean really small or make a little tiny change that moves you toward the life that you’re, that you wanna be living, that you’re trying to get to remember small and manageable things, make it so that you can have success. And every day, remind yourself that you are having success with this new thing. When you break things down and break tasks down to super small, tiny little manageable steps, then you’re almost guaranteed success with them because you’ve made it so small and you keep building and you keep adding from there. But the, that thing you’re gonna do first is break it down to a small manageable step, add it into your routine, try something new.

(12:40):

The fourth thing I want you to do in this mindset shift strategy is switch your negativity to an attitude of gratitude. Spend one or two minutes every morning, thinking of at least three things that your grateful for a bonus is if you do some kind of journaling with gratitude, or even open the notes app on your phone and just have a running list of notes where every day you add in three things every morning, simple three things, just little bullets of three things that you’re grateful for do this every day at the very least, think of those three things to yourself and give yourself one or two minutes just to do this every morning. And it helps get you into that positive mindset and out of the funk, the fifth thing in the last step for changing your mindset is acknowledging and celebrating the things that you have done.

(13:32):

When you look at a to-do list and it’s not done, even if you did nine out of 10 things on it as humans, we tend to beat ourselves up and think discouraging thoughts because we didn’t do it all. But what about those nine things we did do try not to be discouraged, start listing off the things that you have done to that day. What did you do that day from member? What is most important in life? The things that are most important, probably aren’t even on that list. So think to yourself, all of the things that you have done that day and listed those off, because they’re not on the list, but they were the most important there you have it, five things you can do to help switch your mindset from close is off and negative, to open and accepting. Remember that everything seems impossible until it’s done whatever you’re struggling with, whatever the overwhelming burnout is, wherever it’s coming from, there is a solution. There’s an easier way, a product or a system to simplify and options that will work for every situation that you’re in. When you switch your mindset, the opportunities and options seem to be readily available for you to try. It really is all in your mindset.
