Organizing………………………..Purging………………………….Decluttering………………………………….

Call it what you want but when a space has gotten out of hand and needs to be sorted and organized it always gets worse before it gets better.  Some people get discouraged by this and avoid tackling the project all together but the mess doesn’t last long and the end result is always much much better than the before!

I used 5 simple steps to completely organize this boys walk-in closet and bedroom in one afternoon.  I was able to repurpose all organizing supplies that were in the closet and bedroom so that no new products needed to be purchased.

5 Steps to a Clutter Free Home…

  1.  Empty and clean what you are organizing

  2. Touch EVERY item individually and decide what you will do with it…KEEP, TOSS or DONATE

  3. Sort items that are to be kept, grouping like items together

  4. Find proper storage for items that are staying and put away

  5. Toss the trash and donate the rest

This closet ins’t terrible but it can use some attention.  I followed the steps listed above and involved the homeowner minimally to decide on items that could be tossed and/or donated.

messy boys closet needs organizing

First I emptied the entire closet and grouped items into like categories.  Toys and books that were in the bedroom and play baskets were added to the piles so that I could asses what containers were best for these items.  Clothing was put back in the closet and drawers according to style and size. Items that were too small were placed in the bag to be donated.  Once everything was out and categorized I had the homeowner come in and make decisions about what would stay and what could go……this is the part where it gets worse before it gets better!

Once the decisions were made I put the items back and ended with an organized closet, ROYGBIV bookshelf and orderly bedroom with more open space to play.

What do you think?  I’d say the mess in the middle of the process was worth the end results.  Don’t let the “it gets worse before it gets better” problem stop you from purging and organizing in your home.

Happy organizing!
